Conservation of Breast Cancer Operations

Womens Health Problems - Conserving of breast cancer operations (Breast conserving treatment) is the act of surgery in patients with breast cancer in which surgical removal of cancer only to the tumor-free areas along the underarm lymph cleansing, maintaining ith breast intact, followed by radiotherapy. Based on existing research, the operation of the BCT (Breast conserving treatment) has proved its effectiveness when compared with radical mastectomy, particularly in breast cancer patients station I and II. That study showed no difference between the two surgical procedures in the event of local recurrence in the operating area or elsewhere (lokoregional recurrence) as well as life expectancy (survival) after surgery the results were almost the same.

The goal of BCT is to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue that are histologically the edges of the network must be free of cancer cells and maintaining factors of breast cosmetic patients. Both of these factors should be a major factor and should be done in one stage surgery. The advantage of BCT is the cosmetic factor, where the breast remains intact, so as to reduce the psychological effect caused when the breasts should be lifted.

However, not all patients can be performed breast surgery BCT. Patients who can do BCT is particularly breast cancer stage one or stage two breast cancer patients but with a relatively large breast size. The most ideal when the tumor size of two centimeters or less and is located in the breast side up. For patients with large breast, BCT can be done on the tumor size up to 4-5 cm.

The requirements that must be met in order to do BCT, among others, the location of the tumor is not near the nipple, available means of radiotherapy, the tumor is only one, there is a means of cutting frozen anatomic pathology examination and anatomic pathology doctor. Also there should be personnel who have regular physician is a doctor working on subspesialis surgical oncology (tumors and cancer surgery). Breast cancer patients is not recommended to do action BCT is a cancer patient who was pregnant, people with advanced cancer, when tumor size is large, more than one tumor, the tumor is located near the nipple area.

The decision to choose the type of action relating to breast conservation is very individualized for each patient. Besides the factor of facilities, infrastructure and energy as mentioned above should be there, the factors of the patients themselves are also very decisive. A number of factors needed to support its success, among others, motivation and commitment of patients to perform postoperative radiotherapy treatment which takes 5-6 weeks to radioterapinya. In addition, people should also be aware of and able to accept the possibility of local recurrence risk of approximately 10-20 percent of breast tissue that is maintained over a period of 5-10 years in the future.

In developed countries, BCT has often done since the year 1970-1980's, while in Indonesia, until the mid-90s, BCT is still an alternative therapy in early-stage breast cancer, while the radical mastectomy is still the main choice of therapy protocols. However, BCT is now often done in our country, especially in the Hospital which have facilities that support and competent physician.

Science and technology constantly evolving, so too in the field of medicine, particularly in the field of tumor surgery and cancer (oncology). When the past breast cancer treatment approaches tend towards radical even at an early stage though, so this time for certain cases at an early stage that really qualified to do actions that are not as radical as it used to be that with so that the value of cosmetic surgery more BCT can be maintained without reducing the value of curative or healing.

Breast conservation operations or lumpectomy is a way of therapy for patients with breast cancer who want to keep her breasts. However, better consult your physician before undergoing this therapy.(Womens Health Problems)
